Bearish Engulfing Pattern

The Bearish Engulfing pattern is a commonly used candlestick pattern in technical analysis, indicating a potential reversal in an uptrend.

The Bearish Engulfing pattern consists of two candles:

  1. First Candle: A smaller bullish candle (green or white), representing the continuation of the current uptrend.
  2. Second Candle: A larger bearish candle (red or black) that completely engulfs the body of the first candle. This candle opens above the close of the first candle and closes below its open, indicating strong selling pressure.

Characteristics of the Bearish Engulfing Pattern

  • It typically appears at the top of an uptrend.
  • It signals that the bears (sellers) are taking control, potentially reversing the current uptrend to a downtrend.
  • The larger the engulfing candle compared to the previous candle, the stronger the reversal signal.

Use Case

The Bearish Engulfing pattern forms when a large bearish candle completely engulfs the prior bullish candle’s body, signalling a decisive shift from buying to selling pressure. It is most reliable at the top of uptrends near resistance.

Strategy

Enter short on the close of the engulfing candle or on the next bar’s open when the pattern forms at significant resistance or a prior swing high. Set stops above the engulfing candle’s high. Target the next support level for a minimum 1:2 reward.

Common Mistakes

Do not short every Bearish Engulfing pattern; location matters — it must form at resistance. Avoid entering without waiting for the next candle to confirm the signal. Do not use this pattern without checking that the prior uptrend had sufficient strength to make a reversal meaningful.
