Supertrend Indicator Overview

The Supertrend indicator is a popular trend-following tool that identifies the prevailing market trend and signals potential buy or sell opportunities. This implementation includes enhancements such as customizable ATR calculation, trend highlighting, and optional buy/sell signals.

Key Feature

Customizable ATR Calculation

Users can choose between the built-in ATR or a custom SMA-based ATR method.

This flexibility allows traders to adapt the indicator to different market conditions.

Dynamic Trend Levels

The indicator calculates uptrend (up) and downtrend (dn) levels.

These levels adjust dynamically to reduce false signals during price volatility.

Trend Detection

Trend direction flips when the price crosses the calculated levels:

Uptrend begins when price moves above the downtrend level.

Downtrend begins when price moves below the uptrend level.

Visual Representation

Trend Lines: Green for uptrend, red for downtrend.

Highlight Zones: Optional semi-transparent background color indicates the current trend, making it easier to spot trend changes visually.

Buy/Sell Signals

The indicator can optionally display buy and sell labels directly on the chart.

Buy signal: Trend changes from down to up.

Sell signal: Trend changes from up to down.

Alerts

Automatic alerts can notify traders when the trend changes or a buy/sell signal occurs.

Useful for real-time decision-making without constantly monitoring the chart.

Advantages

Simple, clear visual signals for trend direction.

Flexible ATR calculation to match different trading styles.

Optional alerts and highlighting enhance usability for active traders.

Use Case

Best used in trending markets to follow price direction and reduce whipsaw trades.

Can be combined with other indicators for entry/exit confirmation.
